Pulmonary Rehabilitation
Trinity Health System's Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program is designed
to effect lifestyle change in patients enrolled. These changes are
achieved through safe, physical conditioning, sound educational
sessions, and group support, which emphasize the understanding of
chronic obstructed pulmonary disease. The program's goal is to enhance
the quality of life for the patient. Age is not a factor.

Goals
By participating in our Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program, patients
can learn how to achieve and maintain the healthiest lifestyle
possible. Our specially trained staff works with patients, their
families, and physicians to develop a personalized program of
health and wellness.
The goals of Trinity Health System's Pulmonary Rehabilitation
Program are:
- Increased understanding of lung disease
- Increased endurance
- Decreased shortness of breath with activity
- Increased muscular fitness
- Improved sense of well-being
Program Components
Education
As an integral part of the overall program, education increases
a patient's understanding of their illness and helps them to
identify current habits that can negatively affect their condition.
We cover issues like risk factor reduction, angina, heart attack,
medication, dietary and exercise guidelines, smoking, and breathing
and relaxation methods.
Exercise
Regular exercise increases strength and improves muscle tone.
It can also decrease a patient's resting heart rate and blood
pressure, assist in weight control, decrease shortness of breath
with activity, and enhance their ability to perform daily activities.
Support
Support helps patients and their families realize they are
not alone and fosters the development of relationships with
other clients and staff.
Enrollment
Enrollment into Trinity Health System's Pulmonary Rehabilitation
Program is by physician referral and is reserved for individuals
who have chronic obstructed pulmonary disease (i.e. emphysema,
chronic bronchitis, and asthma).
Program Structure
Phase I - Inpatient
Once an attending physician refers a person to Trinity Health
System's Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program, an assessment is
performed by a Pulmonary Rehabilitation therapist. This assessment
allows our highly trained staff to analyze the educational needs
and determine the overall readiness of a patient.
Phase II - Outpatient
In this phase, individuals are also refered by their physician.
After an assessment of their condition is made, a patient is
scheduled for exercise training with monitoring. Convenient
sessions are scheduled twice per week and last approximately
one hour.
Phase III - Maintenance
Once the outpatient program is concluded, patients may continue
this phase in order to insure their quality of life. Their ongoing
participation in the program can offer them increased endurance,
decreased shortness of breath with activity, and increased muscular
fitness.
