TOR BROTHER HEADS CANCER SUPPORT GROUP

Brother John Paul McMahon, TOR, treasurer for the Holy Spirit Friary at Franciscan University, has been appointed coordinator of the local "Man to Man" support group for prostate cancer survivors by the regional American Cancer Society Office. Brother McMahon will plan and coordinate the activities of the group, leading off with a meeting on March 24th at 7:00 pm at the Tony Teramana Cancer Center on Johnson Road in Steubenville. Mark Trombetta, M.D., Radiation Oncologist and Medical Director of the Center will speak on "Treatment Options and Tests Score - what does it all mean." "All men should absolutely have a PSA test after the age of 50," said Brother John Paul. "And, if prostate cancer runs in the family, they should start having a PSA at the age of 40. It's a simple blood test and it's painless." He discovered the importance of regular testing when an ordinary check up revealed his cancer. Initially in denial, Brother McMahon resisted informing his fellow Franciscans or the larger community of his diagnosis until he realized that he needed the support. Now as a survivor, he's hard at work, making sure others walking the same road will have the community and mutual support they need to cope, survive, and thrive. "The "Man to Man" project is important for all guys. It's educational, informative and interesting. As a survivor, I'm eager to do all I can to spread the word about the imporance of guys getting tested annually," said McMahon. The "Man to Man" group warmly invites public participation to all of its programs. For additional information contact Brother John Paul McMahon, TOR, at 740-283-3771.
